Creta - Chania
Chania de astăzi este formată din oraşul vechi ce a luat naştere având ca nucleu portul antic şi medieval, şi oraşul nou dezvoltat dincolo de zidurile veneţiene la est, până spre peninsula Akrotiri, la Chalepa, cel mai aristrocrtic cartier, reşedinţă a regelui George al Greciei, dar şi la vest cu cartierul Nea Chora unde s-au stabilit greci din Asia, veniţi după schimbul de populaţie din 1923. La sud, oraşul a luat chipul unui oraş modern cu instituţii, clădiri guvernamentale, stadion, grădină publică, bulevarde noi, magazine, în continuarea cărora s-au ridicat cartiere de locuinţe.
Atracţiile turistice ale Chaniei se găsesc în interiorul zidurilor
veneţiene ale oraşului şi sunt reprezentate de labirintul de străduţe
înguste şi întortocheate, de clădirile vechi, de diverse influenţe care
găzduiesc diferite tipuri de hoteluri,in general de tip boutique, magazine şi prăvălii, taverne,
restaurante şi cafenele, unele langa celelalte.
Desigur că ceea ce captează toată atenţia, este portul veneţian
ce ocupă un golf natural lărgit cu unul artificial, construit de
faimoşii ingineri veneţieni. Faleza
este străjuită de clădiri medievale frumoase şi de multe taverne şi
cafenele care sunt pline de turisti tot timpul, dar mai ales seara.
Stucaturile clădirilor din port prind o gingasa nuanţă rozalie la
apusul soarelui, contrastând cu cerul albasru. Este locul favorit
al localnicilor pentru promenadă , dar mai ales al turiştilor. Din când
în când se pot vedea trăsuri cu cai în care uneori turişti aleg să
se plimbe romantic prin Chania şi ajung şi în port.
Dacă regiunea Chania se mândreşte cu cele mai frumoase şi spectaculoase plaje din Creta, oraşul în sine o poate face cu minunatele sale plaje situate fie nu departe de portul veneţian, aflate la marginea sa vestică, la 2-3 km de centru, spre alte staţiuni superbe, unde se ajunge uşor cu autobuzul. Toate sunt plaje de nisip fin, cu intrare lină în apă, cu facilităţi multiple, ce deţin Blue Flag.
