Insula este de fapt un grup de insule format din Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea și Nea Kameni în partea cea mai sudică a Cicladelor.
Vulcanul din Santorini este unul dintre puținii vulcani activi de pe pământ grecesc și european. Insulele care formează Santorini au apărut ca urmare a activității vulcanice intense; Au avut loc douăsprezece erupții uriașe, una aproximativ la 20.000 de ani, iar fiecare erupție violentă a provocat prăbușirea părții centrale a vulcanului, creând un crater mare (caldera). Vulcanul, însă, a reușit să se recreeze din nou și din nou.
