Este renumită în primul rând pentru plajele sale largi, cu nisip fin, dar si pentru vegetatia luxurianta bogata in plantatii de maslini, de citrice si paduri de pini sau pentru fauna rara a carei emblema o reprezinta testoasele Caretta,protejate prin lege.
Pe langa frumusetile naturale, insula ofera vizitatorilor pasionati de aflarea trecutului, posibilitatea de a patrunde in tainele civilizatiei bizantine de alta data.
Pentru Grecia, această insulă are și o valoare deosebită, deoarece este locul de naștere al marelui Dionysius Solomos, poetul și autorul "Imnului Libertății".
Semnul distinctiv al insulei este cea mai faimoasă plajă - "plaja naufragiilor" sau Golful Navagio. Pe o plajă cu nisip alb, există o navă de contrabandă care a naufragiat pe țărm în timpul unei furtuni puternice în 1982. Nava ruginită contrastează puternic cu măreția naturii înconjurătoare. Nava a devenit un loc de mare interes pentru turiști. Apa din golf este de o culoare albastră lăptoasă datorită cantității mari de calcar din mare. Golful este înconjurat din toate părțile de stânci abrupte de culoare aproape albă (unele ajung la o înălțime de 100 m), ceea ce îl face unul dintre cele mai ascunse colțuri ale planetei - accesul se poate face doar pe mare.
Insula este împărțită în două de lanțuri muntoase despărțite de o vale verde. Datorită particularității solului de pe insulă, există și multe izvoare.
